White Turf, a series of winter horse racing events, has been a tradition since 1907 and includes an iconic skijoring event second to none. Skiers control their horses from behind as they race in a heat on a full oval track built on the frozen lake of Saint Moritz.

Whitefish has been an active part of the skijoring world since 1959 when the sport was featured at the local winter carnival. A natural in the Flathead Valley where ski and ranch cultures abound and co-exist naturally side by side, Whitefish Skijoring has remained a strong event throughout the years attracting top competitors from many states. The event is getting a face lift in 2025 under a new board and will be bigger and better than ever!

The Montana Winter Fair was hosted every January in Bozeman from 1946 through 2002, when it re-located to Lewistown, the center of the state. Montana Winter Fair continues its traditions with participants, young and old, from Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota and beyond.

Silverton residents, Pete Maisel and Rob Conaty, brought Skijoring to Silverton in 2010. Silverton Skijoring has been showing substantial growth every year with recent years drawing over 2,500 spectators. The 2024 edition promises to show even more growth, as its popularity increases.

This event is sure to WOW the audience in its intensity and scope. The teams race two at a time, side by side down the race track. A towering gap jump launches skiers and snowboarders into the air and their tricks are judged.

Skijoring has been part of this Flathead Valley town’s tradition since 1959 when the founding father of Whitefish Winter Carnival rounded up local ski legends and recruited local horseman to saddle up their fastest horses and challenged them to pull the skiers.

Since 1980, Red Lodge has hosted a skijoring event at their county fairgrounds in March. For years, it has been the last race of the season. This quaint western town, with its own ski hill nearby, really comes alive when the skijoring community descends upon it.
